Expertise

I have published on open access publishing and open educational resources, but my current research focuses on the digital preservation and publication of slavery records. I am the creator the Cowenhoven Project (cowenhoven.org), which is a digital humanities initiative aimed at identifying all the people enslaved in New York and New Jersey by my paternal ancestors, the Van Kouwenhoven-Conover family. As of September of 2026, I had recovered the names of more than 275 individuals. Formally launched on Juneteenth 2026, the project blends archival research, genealogical scholarship, and data science.
