Oral Health Dental Health Health of Underserved Populations
Dental health, encompassing the health of teeth and gums, is a critical component of overall well-being. However, underserved populations have limited access to resources and often face significant barriers to accessing dental care. Over half of children and adolescents (57%) and nearly all adults (90%) in the U.S. have experienced cavities. Chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and preterm birth are strongly associated with poor oral health. Despite these well-documented connections, access to quality care remains inequitable, with disparities compounded by social determinants of health including income, education, and geography. The Connecticut Foundation for Dental Outreach addresses some of these dental health disparities by hosting the Connecticut Mission of Mercy Free Dental Clinic (CTMOM). This program plays a critical role in alleviating disparities by offering free preventive and restorative services to underserved communities experiencing limited healthcare access. This report presents an analysis of qualitative interviews conducted to explore the experiences of CTMOM patients (n=20) who received care in June 2025. The research seeks to inform strategies for increasing the effectiveness of oral health programs and policies.
