Abstract
Dr. Spencer, a speech-language pathologist (SLP), was interviewing Mrs. Michaels, the mother of 2½-year-old Izzi. Mom reported that Izzi only says a few single words and was concerned her daughter was delayed compared with the neighborhood children. During the interview, Izzi was playing on the floor behind her Mom. Midway through the interview, Mrs. Michaels reached into her handbag, retrieved a plastic bag of Goldfish crackers, and gave one to Izzi. Dr. Spencer asked Mom to explain why she did this. Mrs. Michaels told her that because she saw Izzi signmore, she gave her a Goldfish. After acknowledging the mother’s delight at the child’s sign, Dr. Spencer took this opportunity to collaborate with Mom about how she could support Izzi’s communication development.
