Abstract
In the target article, Hopwood and colleagues (2020) presented a review of the hierarchical taxonomy of psychopathology (HiTOP) classification system and proposed potential advantages of HiTOP for integrative psychotherapy research and practice. In this commentary, we note parallels between the aims of HiTOP and psychotherapy integration. We propose how an integrative therapist might employ HiTOP and how stepping outside of the traditional categories of orientations and focusing more attention on common change principles and processes might inform the continuing development of HiTOP. We also highlight the importance of including diverse clinical and cultural perspectives in research efforts.
