Artificial Intelligence Mathematics Education
This research investigates the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools on student engagement, perceived learning, and math anxiety in college-level mathematics courses. The study addresses the question: How can generative AI be effectively incorporated into the mathematical learning process to enhance student learning experience? Building upon existing literature on math anxiety, AI-assisted learning, student engagement, and prompt engineering, this project contributes to the growing body of research exploring how emerging technologies reshape traditional mathematics education. Employing a mixed-methods, survey-based approach across two phases, data were collected from undergraduate students enrolled in college-level math courses. The first survey assessed students' existing study habits, math experiences, and patterns of AI use, and informed the development of a structured AI Study Guide focused on prompt engineering and responsible AI use. The second survey gathered students' reflections on incorporating the guide into their study routines for an upcoming exam. Responses were qualitatively coded and statistically analyzed to identify patterns in AI use, perceived benefits, and limitations. Findings suggest that students predominantly use AI as an answer-checking tool rather than for conceptual learning, and that a structured guide may shift usage toward broader, more learning-oriented applications, though limitations, including AI inaccuracies and the exploratory scope of the second phase, constrain the strength of these conclusions. The research contributes a structured study guide that introduces students and educators to thoughtful, prompt-engineering–informed AI use in mathematics instruction. Ultimately, this project seeks to balance innovation with pedagogical integrity, offering preliminary recommendations for the responsible adoption of AI in mathematics education.
