Abstract
Hiroko Matsuda's Liminality of the Japanese Empire: Border Crossings from Okinawa to Colonial Taiwan (University of Hawai'i Press, 2019) is a welcome addition to the growing body of English-language scholarship detailing the lived experiences of the colonial peoples of the Japanese empire. Matsuda examines Okinawan migrants, in particular those from the Yaeyama Islands and the Miyako Islands, by following their journeys to and experiences in colonial Taiwan.
