Abstract
Positive youth development (PYD) is part of the broader sport for development (SfD) field, which is defined as the intentional use of sport to achieve development and/or social change outcomes (Schulenkorf et al., 2016). Those studying PYD through sport tend to examine the developmental aspects of sport for individuals, which is incredibly important, but this is just one piece of the puzzle, a fragment of the broader tapestry of the transdisciplinary field of SfD. What might be achieved if we transcend disciplinary boundaries, seeking to understand the conceptual, theoretical, philosophical, and methodological approaches of different disciplines (e.g., sport management, sport sociology, sport pedagogy)? What might be possible if we break down disciplinary silos, seeking collective contributions that create new knowledge and facilitate innovative solutions? The purpose of this chapter is to explore the deconstruction of disciplinary boundaries surrounding both PYD and SfD, along with specific guidance on how this might be achieved.
