Abstract
This chapter presents four key dimensions to incorporate when teaching about the European Union (EU). The first section contextualizes the EU in relation to broader international organizations (IOs) by showing how the EU resembles and diverges from other IOs and polities. Section two contextualizes the EU's historical evolution by focusing on the dynamics of EU widening and deepening, and links these dynamics to key theories of European integration. Section three focuses on ways to study intergovernmentalism and supranationalism through the prism of EU institutions and introduces the theory of multilevel governance. The fourth section examines regionalism and inter-regionalism for IOs where the EU is often the key actor and raises questions about the compatibility of universal and regional modes of IO. Each section ends with suggestions for potential questions, cases, or debates that can stimulate classroom engagement.
