Abstract
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the incarceration rates for African American men are five to seven times greater than those for white men in the same age cohorts, while Latino men’s rates of incarceration are nearly twice those of whites (Harrison and Beck 2006). Because prior incarceration can result in an ex-offender experiencing long-term unem-ployment or low-wage employment, African American and Latino men who have been incarcerated are more likely than whites to experience careers characterized by economic instability.
