Abstract
In the early stages of becoming a therapist, psychotherapy training and clinical supervision are deemed crucial. However, the development of psychotherapists does not end when therapists complete their graduate training or when they gain licensure. The great majority of clinical practice will actually take place after licensure. This chapter first describes some of the potential benefits that clinicians may gain from postgraduate educational experiences, such as an "antidote" to the loss of professional knowledge during one's career, gain of expertise, acquisition of knowledge and skills related to ethical, professional, and evidence-based practices, provision of support and feedback, and mitigation of burnout. It then reviews the empirical evidence for a variety of such experiences, including conferences and workshops (in person and online), supervision, peer supervision, online supervision, and personal therapy. The chapter also offers suggestions for clinical and research questions that should be examined in the future. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: chapter)
