Abstract
The negative impact of partner violence on women's health has been well established. It also is known that ethnic minority women are often in poorer health than their White counterparts. What happens when minority status and partner violence intersect? All women in battering relationships face barriers to leaving these relationships and living their lives free from violence. These barriers are compounded for women of color. Poverty, language barriers, illegal immigration status, and racism all limit their options. The longer they are in these relationships, the greater the negative impact on their physical and mental health. This chapter offers an explanatory glimpse into the lives of battered women of color and how their culture shapes their ability to leave and their willingness to seek help.
