Abstract
PhotoVoice is a participatory action form of ethical photography that weaves together self-advocacy and community participation as an agent of change, particularly for those with identities that have been historically and socially excluded. PhotoVoice has been found to deeply facilitate factors of posttraumatic growth (PTG), particularly the domains of relating to others and new possibilities, as it is powerfully inclusive, crossing cultural and linguistic barriers to facilitate change and healing as well as employing a transformative participating process. This chapter discusses the theoretical foundations of PhotoVoice as an agent of change and facilitation of healing following traumatic exposure at both the individual and community levels, its compatibility with PTG in general as well as with its specific domains. Current research related to PhotoVoice as a facilitator of PTG is reviewed and suggestions for clinical applications with individuals, groups, and communities are offered.
